sibilants: darkening and lightening

French sibliant sh is said to be unrounded, whereas English sh is said to be partially rounded. Why? French /sh/ is darker than English /sh/. How to produce dark /sh/: by pulling ur lips back, like the way ya do when ya pronounce /y/ (like in yay).
