umlaut and certain irregular English plurals

umlaut: a vowel harmony phenomenon. For instance, "fronting of back vowels" in American English.

How to tell which of the following is plural?

1. foot vs feet
2. tooth vs teeth
3. mouse vs mice

Answer: fronted version is plural.
